Making the decision to be joined in marriage at Zion is intentional. It’s a chance to slow down and savor the beauty of your love story. This once-in-a-lifetime experience will allow you to strengthen your bond with each other while connecting with the boundless landscape that will surround you.

In the guide below, you’ll find all the information needed for eloping in Zion National Park. Including details on how to obtain your special use permit, where to apply for your marriage license, things to do in Zion, Zion National Park Lodging, Zion elopement packages, the best season to visit, and more.

Allow this guide to help you envision the quiet canyons at sunrise while eloping in Zion, or the beauty of the desert sky on one of the most significant days of your life.

What is Eloping?

You might be wondering, what is eloping? Over time, the meaning behind the term elopement has become an umbrella term. In fact, you’ve heard the terms elope and wedding used interchangeably. You’ve probably also heard eloping referred to as several things, making it a catch-all term, and, if I’m being honest, utterly confusing!

There was a time, long ago, when the definition of eloping meant running off to Vegas to get or heading to the courthouse to get married. But eloping has evolved, becoming much more intentional than just running off to get married.

Now, the modern definition of eloping means so much more. As an experienced elopement photographer in Zion, I know that an elopement is the decision to get married with purpose and fulfilling meaning behind it.

An elopement is also intimate and can include up to 15 guests in attendance. Or it can be the couple, their officiant, and their photographer. Without a doubt, couples planning a Zion National Park elopement, more often than not, are planning international elopements that fit this exact description.

Couples know they want to get married in a stunning location, with a handful of guests by their side. Guests who are already part of their everyday lives, and guests they couldn’t imagine enjoying this experience without. Not a laundry list of guests that include distant family members they haven’t seen in a while.

I would take the definition of eloping in Zion even further and add that couples who are planning a Zion National Park elopement are unbound by expectations and share a love that is wild and bold. They want to get married in an awe-inspiring landscape through an unforgettable experience. If that sounds like you, then keep reading for more details on how to elope in Zion National Park.

Obtaining a Special Use Permit for Your Zion Elopement

In order for weddings at Zion National Park to be legally binding and presided over by a wedding officiant, you will need to obtain a marriage license as well as a special-use permit. I would highly recommend applying for your Zion National Park special-use permit first. From there, you can obtain a marriage license through the local county clerk’s office.

Whether you choose to host sacred wedding vows or a legally binding ceremony, you will still need to apply for a special use permit through the National Park Service.

This application costs $100 and must be submitted at least three weeks in advance of the date of your wedding. Once your permit has been approved, it will include two hours of access to the park for your wedding ceremony (or sacred vows) and wedding photography experience.

Sacred Wedding Ceremonies at Zion National Park

Symbolic or sacred wedding vows are allowed within Zion. These are considered private ceremonies between you and your partner without an officiant present. If you prefer your Zion elopement to include a sacred ceremony, you can scroll past the section that details how to obtain a marriage license.

Obtaining a Marriage License

For Zion Weddings to be a legally binding marriage, you will need to take is to apply for a marriage license. This process can be done at any county clerk’s office. Once you have been granted your marriage license, you are free to get married! There is no waiting period involved. Actually, your marriage license is valid for 32 days from the date of issuance.

In the state of Utah, couples hoping to plan a Zion wedding will need to apply for a marriage license as well as have their marriage solemnized. You can easily apply for a marriage license at any county clerk’s office. Want to skip the in-person visit? You can also apply for a marriage license online by visiting this link.

Steps to apply for a marriage license

  • You will both need to complete an in-person application at the county clerk’s office
  • You both need to state your name, address, date of birth, and social security number
  • Valid government-issued identification must be presented. This can include your passport, birth certificate, driver’s license, or state ID card
  • You must also provide the names and birthplaces of both of your parents, including your mother’s maiden name
  • You will need to pay a fee to obtain your marriage license; once issued, your marriage license comes with two certified copies

Eloping in Zion National Park

Eloping in  Zion National Park with your special-use permit covers 6 specific locations of the park. Additionally, each allowable location for eloping in Zion National Park only permits a specific number of guests to be in attendance. I’ve broken down each of the locations, including the total allowable guest count, in the details below.

Zion Canyon Area

Zion Canyon area is located within the Southern half of the park. This space is the most highly visited location within the park, partly because of its phenomenal views! Within Zion Canyon Area, there are 5 distinct locations to host your Zion National Park Elopement with space for guests.

The location you select will depend on the experience you are seeking from your Zion National Park elopement, along with the total number of guests you intend to invite.

It’s also important to remember that although you’ve obtained a special use permit for eloping in Zion National Park, each of these spaces will still be open to other park visitors. I’ve detailed each space available for your ceremony in Zion Canyon below.

1. Temple of Sinawava

The Temple of Sinawava is a breathtaking space that features a natural amphitheater, carved by the Virgin River. This particular location in the park is filled with views of staggering rock formations accented by lush greenery at the base.

Capacity | Temple of Sinawava can host up to 35 guests for your elopement.

Pros: The Temple of Sinawava is one of the most popular locations for an elopement due to its easy accessibility and proximity to the river. The nearby, towering red rocks create an immersive experience through beautiful scenery that embodies the heart of Zion. n

Cons: After parking at the visitor center, you and your guests will need to take the Zion shuttle bus to get to and from this location. The added logistics will require organization and planning, which may detract from your overall experience.

My rating: 1/6 – I recommend this location 1st.

2. Menu Falls

Menu Falls in Zion

A stunning waterfall in Zion National Park, Menu Falls is positioned in an alcove along  Zion Canyon Road. The space here is intimate and idyllic, offering an unforgettable Zion elopement.

Capacity | Menu Falls can host a maximum of 10 guests for your elopement.

Pros: Tucked away and private, this hidden space provides intimacy for reciting deeply heartfelt personal vows. The backdrop features lush greenery and a small running waterfall.

Cons: A Menu Falls elopement requires 15-20 minutes of walking to access the space, which is small and tight. There are no red rocks visible from this space. However, I recommend a wedding photography experience by the river, which depicts towering rocks.

My rating: 6/6 – I recommend this location 6th

3. Zion Lodge Lawn

The Zion Lodge lawn is a positively stunning location to elope in Zion National Park. This space features larger-than-life cliffs accented by cottonwood trees. Though it does have space for a larger number of guests, it’s important to know that this location within the park is only accessible via shuttle and tends to get busier in the summer months.

Capacity | Zion Lodge Lawn can host a maximum of 75 guests for your elopement

Pros: Eloping at Zion Lodge is an amazing option for couples with a larger-sized guest list in attendance. It is also easy to access after a short shuttle ride. If you plan on hosting a Zion Lodge elopement, I highly recommend you opt for overnight accommodations on the night before and the day of. This will help alleviate stress, offering you the ease to enjoy your elopement.

Cons: Your guests will have to park at the visitors center in order to take the Zion shuttle bus to and from this location. This will require organization, planning, and a little patience.

My rating: 3/6 I recommend this location 3rd

4. Nature Center North Lawn

Nature Center North Lawn Elopement in Zion

Elopements at Zion in the Nature Center North Lawn are only available from November to early April. This space is relatively larger than the other locations available within the Zion Canyon Area. It’s a vast grassy expanse with amazing mountain views in every direction.

Capacity | The Nature Center North Lawn can accommodate a maximum of 50 guests for your elopement.

Pros: The Nature Center North Lawn is located at the entrance of the park, making it easily accessible. It also provides sweeping panoramic views embodying the magnificence of Zion.

Cons: Parking in this area can be very limited, so it will be important to have a backup plan. For the couples whose Zion elopements I capture, I partner with a local company that offers shuttle drop-off and pick-up for a seamless wedding day experience.

My rating: 5/6 – I recommend this location 5th

5. South Campground Amphitheater

The final location in Zion Canyon area for hosting your vows is the South Campground Amphitheater. This location in the park is typically used for local plays and events. It features built-in wooden benches so your guests will have a place to sit while they honor your vows. The South Campground Amphitheater is a beautifully vivid location with unforgettable views.

Capacity | Elopements at the South Campground Amphitheater can accommodate a total of 100 guests.

Pros: The South Campground Amphitheater is at the entrance of the park and easy to get to. Breathtaking 360 degrees, ample seating for guests, and a stage to serve as the focal point of your wedding ceremony.

Cons: Due to its proximity to the entrance, parking can be limited, and you should have a backup place in place. For couples eloping in Zion, I partner with a local company that offers shuttle drop-off and pick-up for a stress-free wedding day experience

My rating: 4/6

Note: At the time of publishing this article, the area is under construction and unavailable for Zion weddings. [Oct 2025]

Kolob Canyon Area

Located in the Northwest corner of Zion National Park, you’ll find Kolob Canyon. This area is often referred to as ‘the road less traveled’ and attracts fewer visitors than the Zion Canyon area. Kolob Canyon Area also offers a beautiful location for hosting your elopement in  Zion National Park.

Timber Creek Overlook

The trail leading up to the overlook follows a rocky path. However, the trail is relatively short and accessible for hikers of all levels. But, without a doubt, the view from the overlook is some of the most awe-inspiring scenery. It’s a serene and tranquil setting for eloping in  Zion National Park.

Capacity | Timber Creek Overlook can host a maximum of 20 guests (with parking space for 4 cars) for your elopement

Pros: This less frequently visited area offers unparalleled views, perfect for any couple who wishes to bathe in the beauty of Zion during their elopement. It’s also easy to access with a 0.6-mile hike each way.

Cons: Timber Creek Overlook is a 1-hour drive North from the South Entrance. There are not many nearby amenities, and is best for couples opting for accommodations in Hurricane or Cedar City

My rating: 4/6 – I recommend this location 4th

Are Zion wedding ceremonies allowed in other areas of the park?

It can feel limiting to know that there are only 6 locations within Zion where a legally binding wedding ceremony can take place. So you might be wondering if Zion wedding ceremonies are allowed in other areas of the park.

There is a way around this. As long as you have your permit, you can exchange sacred wedding vows, without an officiant present, in any other area of the park. This can be done in place of having a legally binding wedding ceremony in Zion with an officiant.

Or, you can exchange private vows before or even after your legally binding wedding ceremony in Zion with an officiant.

There are so many exquisite locations throughout the park that will provide solitude for exchanging private vows, all while capturing every beautifully heartfelt moment in the process.

If you need a stunning location for sacred weddings in Zion,  I recommend checking out Observation Point. It’s an elevated peak featuring panoramic views of the sprawling canyon and beautiful landscape in every direction.

What time of year is best to Elope in Zion National Park?

If you’re considering a Zion National Park elopement, you might be wondering what time of year is best for your vows and exploring.

Every season at Zion brings its own unique landscape and experience. Having worked as a Zion elopement photographer for over 11 years, I’ve come to understand that a wedding during each month of the year looks and feels different. If you’re stuck on selecting a date for your Zion elopement, use the guide below to help you navigate what to expect at Zion National Park, no matter the season.

Winter Elopements at Zion National Park

December – January

Temperature | 30s-50s

Landscape | Winter in Zion can be frigid, cold, and icy. However, it can also be a magical wonderland where some of the fall foliage hangs around to fill the frames of your Zion wedding photos.

Crowds | Minus Thanksgiving & Christmas break, winter is arguably the least crowded time to plan your Zion wedding.

What to expect | A winter Zion elopement is short on daylight, so planning your ceremony for an optimal time will be important for an enjoyable experience that includes wedding photography

Pro Tip: Plan for cold weather! Your wedding day attire should include dressy coats and warm boots. Get stoked rather than spooked if snow is in the forecast because Zion turns into Narnia when blanketed with flurries.

Spring Elopements  at Zion National Park

Late February – April

Temperature | 30s-60s

Landscape | Spring in Zion comes with slightly warmer temperatures and a low chance of rainfall. During Spring, daylight hours increase, and locals tend to get out of doors to enjoy outdoor activities.

Crowds | The park can get crowded during Spring. Visitors love to enjoy the sights of the wildflowers with moderate temperatures before the summer heat.

What to expect | During the day, the temperature in Zion is nearly perfect! The park is vibrant with wildflowers and greenery on display, and frozen waterfalls reawakening, making it an amazing time for a  Zion elopement.

Pro Tip: Hire a local Zion elopement photographer! As a local, my knowledge of the area helps my couples avoid the crowds.

Summer Elopements at Zion National Park

May – August

Temperature | 80s-100s

Landscape | Zion National Park during the summer is lush. It’s bustling with greenery and an exuberant landscape. However, evening rainstorms are a common occurrence in Zion during the summer.

Crowds | Summer is by far one of the busiest seasons at Zion. But longer days mean more time to plan your elopement. If you’re considering a Zion elopement during the summer, I highly recommend sunrise vows! This will allow you to enjoy the beauty of the park without the crowds, and before the temperature becomes unbearable. It’s also one of the best times of day for capturing breathtaking wedding photos.

What to expect | Summers at Zion are undeniably hot, but crowd levels are also at their highest. If you have your heart set on eloping in Zion National Park during the summer, I promise you cannot go wrong with sunrise vows.

Pro Tip:  Avoid the mid-afternoon. This time of day is very hot and the canyon provides little ot no shade. Segment your day into two timelines, including a shoot at sunrise and one at sunset. This will allow you to avoid the hottest part of the day while soaking up the beauty of the quiet canyon.

Fall Elopements at Zion National Park

September – November

Temperature | 60s-90s

Landscape | Zion is stunning with an autumnal glow during the fall months. The evenings are cool, and the cottonwood trees are in full bloom.

Crowds | You can expect some crowds at Zion during fall, partially due to the cooler temperatures and partially because of the foliage.

What to expect | A  Zion National Park elopement during fall will be unexpected, in the best way possible. In fact, I think the fall season is one of Zion’s best-kept secrets.

Pro Tip:  If you plan on a fall elopement in Zion, do not hesitate when booking your vendors. This is especially true for late October to early November when wedding season is at its height. Vendors tend to be booked in advance, so it’s important to inquire as soon as possible.
