If you only have a few hours to see the highlights of Zion National Park or you are looking for the best way to get a quick lay of the land, it’s easy to hop on the free shuttle in Springdale and go for a drive up Zion Canyon.
For convenience, and due to Zion’s popularity and the increasing volume of visitors, a shuttle system was established in 1997. The system eliminates many traffic and parking problems and protects the Zion environment. During some months of the year, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is accessible by private vehicle; during others, access is by shuttle only (visit the link at the bottom of the page for specific dates).
Because of limited parking availability in Zion, the lots at Zion Canyon Visitor Center fill up quickly, usually before mid-day. To avoid the hassle of finding parking, park in the town of Springdale and ride the free town shuttle to the park. Parking anywhere along the road in town that does not have parking restrictions is permissible. Look for “Shuttle Parking” signs throughout town for shuttle stops. Another option is to simply leave your vehicle at your place of lodging if you are staying in the area. Radio station 1610 AM has more information.
The Springdale Shuttle stops at nine locations in Springdale, and the Zion Canyon Shuttle stops at nine locations in the park. The transfer between loops is done at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. Use of the shuttle is free, and you may get on and off as often as you like. During the busy season, the free buses run from early morning until late evening, as often as every seven minutes. Thus, you do not need to rush to catch a certain shuttle. However, intervals alter with the seasons. Current schedules are posted at each stop, in the map & guide, and at the visitor centers. Buses are wheelchair accessible.
