MAKE A CHOICE AND THEN MAKE IT THE RIGHT CHOICE
That was first said to me by my mentor at age 16 and still sits with me nearly 18 years later.
He would then tell it to me again with tears swelling in my eyes as I sat in his living room deciding to take the leap in 2021 to move back to the Big Island from Oahu. It would be the mantra I would say to myself when deciding to leave the Big Island only 3 short years later. It has and will always be something that continues to find me against every growth point. It is both an anchor and a key to freedom.
Everytime. When I first met my photography mentor, he needed help putting together a book of letters written by his father. I had never put together a book before, but I figured it out, just like I had been challenged to do so many other times in my teenage years. This theme has followed me throughout my adulthood and is why I can attest that my resume is a long and unexpected list of skill sets.I would spend hours sitting with JR helping him type emails and organize photographs, all while listening to classical music playing on his Bose radio set to NPR. Back then, JR used a fax machine to communicate.  He would write letters to friends or his assistant, who lived two time zones away. He refused to learn email even though I was more than willing to teach him – mostly so I could get out of my random “please come by to help me with an email” phone calls I would receive throughout the week. I thought he was ancient and wacky. And to this day he still is to me.Ancient as in wise. Wacky as in embodied. The type of character that makes you feel like you can bring your full creative self. And yes, it will be examined, but in the most playful and unassuming way.If you are someone who knows JR, then you have been lucky enough to be in front of his lens, caught him mid-beach swim at sunrise,  smirked at one of his bad jokes, or had a profound conversation about art, vocation, and God – most likely all at once.JR taught me the two most important components of life and photography: “Light and relationships”Reflecting on my time with JR, I realize something now – in our younger years, in our innocence, our naivete, we remain open to pursuing things outside of our comfort zone; we are more willing to learn, tinker, explore. The gift  of our youthfulness is being a fool, and the work of our maturation is to cultivate some level of foolishness in our process of evolution. There is a profound lightness in not knowing.
There is magic in being brand new at something. It is only with time that we make the unknown feel daunting. It haunts us late into the night. It makes us insecure about our choices. It drowns our inspiration and ideas. We want to speed up the timeline; we want to force things into order; WE WANT IT ALL TO BE REVEALED.We want guaranteed success before we have even bravely and coherently named the thing we want.We only seem to permit ourselves to dream when there is absolutely no risk involved. Which is so wild because I have never had any experience worth having that didn’t require risk. Risk is the price we pay to be marveled by the absolute mystery that is this  human experience. Risk is the token to pass go into your desires.Risk is an energetic currency of creation. And so why, as we get older, do we get wiser, but we get less risky? As if the data doesn’t point to one simple truth: You have survived quite literally everything up until this point. And I can almost guarantee that the next choice you make will also end up with one of two things: more of what you want or clarification of what you don’t.You might be proud to know that nearly two decades later, JR texts via cell – yes, he went outside his own comfort zone eventually. He still doesn’t use a computer and continues to print all of his photos at Costco instead of reviewing them digitally – we gotta love someone who also chooses to keep some things sacred and slowed down. What JR has taught me through both his longstanding presence and his faith is that all of our choices are backed by the grace of God.So choose. As in, you actually can’t lose. As in, whatever you decide and then set out towards is going to shape you exactly as it is designed. As in, go make it right.I don’t believe in divine timing anymore as the only barometer for reward; I believe in divine resonance. Divine attunement. Divine availability. The more you are able to hold the capacity to believe in what it is you want, the more you are able to actualize it.Our work right now is to clear out the stories, noise, and underbelly of anything that is repelling our desires. To get so protective of our dreams and hopes. To unclench our fists and be open to the way the universe wants to surprise us. To flirt, dance, and play with desire. To be reborn.
Unshackled.
Freed.
Foolish.Dissolve the beliefs, stories, and identities that kept you seemingly safe up until now. Most likely they were not even yours to begin with. If this life is brief, if it’s all an illusion, if it’s all of your making, then why not take the risk and make it unapologetically, undoubtedly, and uniquely yours?I fully, with my whole heart, believe in you.

It’s not often that I willing and intentional agree, and then go out of my way to subscribe and then confirm my subscription. Mostly because I never read emails so my inbox is very overwhelming but also because it’s just really hard to give away my every and attention.

This message caught my attention within seconds, and held it until the words stops. I was immediately encourage to share two things that caught my attention:

The message itself carries energy, the container although invisible also tales shape the more you read the words and receive the energy.

Risk is an energetic currency of creation.

“yes, he went outside his own comfort zone eventually. He still doesn’t use a computer and continues to print all of his photos at Costco instead of reviewing them digitally – we gotta love someone who also chooses to keep some things sacred and slowed down.”

He prints his photos… to keep some things sacred and slowed down.

  • this is a beauty way to describe what I am trying to offer, the heart of the experince I want to build with you. Photos as ceremony and Rituals to remember.
  • Being OPEN.

SHOWCASE couple that had so many moments plan, different locations and marked the day as it was passing through different “rites or rituals” all through intention – maybe look at original emails and inquiry – marking time with fun, silly, sacred, moments – the glue is intention – intention to relive special moments – slowing down to watch the videos your loved ones have shared, to write your vows and or to write shared values and promisees to one another.

share about my husband and Is journal –

my goal is to inspire you – the way JR inspired Tahiti and Tahiti inspired me , a ripple of risk

maybe not risk of anything dangerous, but risk with vunerability – of being seen- of doing something I have never done before, without edits 🙂 starting before I am ready, embodying my own expansion in hopes you’ll be brave enough to embody your own energy
